Zakat al-Fitr

What is Zakat-al-Fitr?

Zakat-al-Fitr (also known as Fitr or Sadaqat al-Fitr) is the charity of breaking the fast. It is an obligatory donation for every Muslim-man, woman, and child-before the Eid ul-Fitr prayer.

It purifies the fast, compensates for any shortcomings during Ramadan, and ensures that those in need can also celebrate Eid with dignity and joy.

Who Pays & When

Obligation & Timing

Who Must Pay

Every Muslim who has the means must pay Zakat-al-Fitr. The head of the household typically pays on behalf of all dependents—spouse, children, and any others under their care—so that each person is covered before Eid.

When to Pay

Zakat-al-Fitr must be paid before the Eid ul-Fitr prayer. It is best to give it in the last days of Ramadan or on the morning of Eid before the prayer. The Prophet ﷺ emphasised that giving before the Eid prayer ensures it is accepted as Zakat al-Fitr.
